Grandma
As I, myself have never yet faced cancer I cannot express what it must feel like to undergo radiation treatments and the news of “you have cancer”. I cannot begin to describe what it must feel like. The isolation and distraught one must feel to the awful news. My grandma has heard this news twice. In 2022 my grandma faced colon cancer, a type of cancer which still impacts her today. She was fortunate enough to overcome and beat the cancer a feat that a small minority would not accomplish. My grandmother was fortunate enough to receive the best possible medical facilities in Australia leaving her with a strong 91% survival rate. But you see, my family are not from Australia. We are proud people of Myanmar, a country located in South East Asia which has recently undergone a military dictatorship - destabilising the country and affecting millions. The civil war not only affects the health of the citizens but also of future generations. The smoke exhaled by the bombs and the arson committed are catalysts for various types of cancers; predominantly lung cancer. It has been expected for the cancer rates in Myanmar to increase as carbon levels and temperature increase causing the annual number of cancer cases to increase. These small charitable donations help fund research and insights into new treatment alternatives - hopefully shifting towards a more non-invasive treatment option. All donations go towards the bigger objective - curing all cancer, something we can hopefully achieve in the near future.
Towards the end of 2023, my grandma was faced with hearing the exact same phrase “You have cancer” not only had her cancer returned, but it had also metastasised into her spine. In December of 2023, she had been diagnosed with spinal cancer. Since then she has faced many surgeries, recently with a major surgery that occurred in late April where she spent the subsequent two weeks in the ICU. My grandmother alongside 150,000 other Australians are just some of the people who will be fighting against cancer this year. Something that must change. As a grandson of a cancer survivor, I believe it should be my responsibility to provide awareness on such matters because cancer doesn’t just affect the host. It affects everyone.
Thank you for your support.
