Lost most loved one to cancer!
"To die completely, a person must not only forget but be forgotten, and he who is not forgotten is not dead."
This year, I’m taking on Relay For Life and participating in BRISBANE 2024 relay on 12th October, to raise funds in memory of my beloved husband, Durga, whom I lost to lung cancer.
An Indian born migrant to AUSTRALIA, in early 90’s, he made this wonderful land his home for 30 years. A health-conscious, father of two, who never smoked and barely a social drinker, at 54, developed cough like symptoms which resulted in a devastating diagnosis of advanced lung cancer, with only 6 - 8 months to live.
However, with 6 lines of immuno/chemo/trial/radiation treatments and 2 near to death situations, he fought for 2 years and 8 months against cancer with utmost courage and breathed his last on 4th Oct 2023 1:50pm. I am so grateful that the research resulting in advanced cancer treatments, gave Durga an extra 2 years of life, giving him an opportunity to add his fatherly support and advice to our son's university choices.
The most satisfying moments that he got during his last days, was to watch from his death bed via live webcast, our daughter’s Law admission ceremony at the Victorian Supreme Court. It’s heart breaking, yet, all thanks to the cancer treatments and support he got to be able to see this momentous event in our daughter’s life!
With the hope that ongoing research can improve and develop new cancer treatments to save or extend many lives, I will donate the equivalent amount of the funds I raise, (as of closing ceremony of the relay day) to research into cancer treatment.

Raised $2595 and I donated equivalent amount, making me the highest individual fundraiser for Brisbane 2024 Relay for Life.
It’s a day full of rollercoaster of emotions. Laps and
laps of walking round the track at UQ sports track in hot sun, starting noon
until the candlelight ceremony.
And the candlelight ceremony, It’s so beautiful!!! Under
the open sky, (no stars though!) with Heavens opened bucketing down and the
rain washing away tears. If your loved ones from Heaven are watching over you,
is true, I felt it right at that moment!!!
All in all, WHAT. A. BEAUTIFUL. DAY!!!
Thanks to ‘Rivers Insurance Cancer Warriors’ who
supported me on the day and a special thanks to Gaelene, an angel with
invisible wings, who reached out to me, comforted me, eased my pain and made me
part of their team throughout the event.
And a very special thanks to my dearest colleague and
best friend Patricia, who supported me since i shared my idea of relaying and
all along.
