Half Relay Information

Please note that Relay for Life Darwin is an all-night event. If you wish to register but you do not wish to stay all night you can register for a Half Relay and depart at midnight. You must pre-register to depart at midnight. Upon registration, please advise the event contact Page at fundraising@cancernt.org.au you will be registering for a Half Relay.

Please note if you are registering for a Half Relay you and your team will only be eligible for the Highest Community Fundraiser and the Highest Corporate Fundraiser awards.

What happens on the day?

You don’t have to stay on the track all 12 hours, but we encourage teams to have at least one person on the track at all times to get the most out of your Relay experience.

What to bring to Relay

Be sure to come to Relay prepared!  Remember, Relay runs for over 12 hours and can be cool. Here’s a list of things that teams should be sure to have handy on the day:

• Tent(s), marquees for your campsite
• Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm for the afternoon before sunset in case it is sunny!)
• Come in your team’s dress up attire!
• Comfortable walking/running shoes
• Warm clothing (pants, jackets, beanies, gloves, etc.)
• Torch and spare batteries
• A change of clothes
• Camping gear (Tent, sleeping bag, pillows, blankets, esky, cutlery, cups, water bottle, food and drink.)
• Folding chairs and tables
• Plastic sheeting or rubber-backed rug (good on cold or damp ground)
• Campsite decorations and team banners
• Team costumes
• Money and loose change
• Camera to capture those special moments
• Your team!

What not to bring

• Pets (guide dogs and service dogs are welcome)
• Bikes, scooters, or roller blades/skates
• Glass
• Fundraising money that you want to bank (please bank any money prior to the event or the next business day after Relay)
• Remember, Relay For Life is a smoke-free, vape-free and alcohol-free event.

Relay For Life is a time for our community to come together and celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who are no longer with us and fight back against cancer.

If you or anyone you love has ever heard the words ‘you have cancer’, you know how much if affects us and the people around us. None should face cancer alone, so whether you’re a Survivor or Carer, getting involved in your local Relay For Life can introduce you to others who are facing similar challenges and create opportunities for sharing stories, friendship and hope.

To honour your inspiring journey, you’re invited to be our Guest of Honour at Relay For Life.

You can choose to walk in the Survivor and Carer’s Lap of Honour or just come along for the celebrations.

We encourage participants to pre-register for the Survivors and Carers Lap.

Youth Team Supervisors

All participants under 18 years of age are required to have a supervisor over the age of 21 present with their team for the duration of the event.

If you are under 18 years of age, you are required to have a parent or guardian complete a Parental Consent Form before the event.

You must register your supervisor by completing the Youth Supervisor Form that is emailed to you upon registering as a youth. It is the responsibility of the parent, guardian, team captain or youth to ensure the youth supervisor has completed this form.

Please note that for youth teams, you must have 1 supervisor per 10 youth participants.

If a youth team attends Relay For Life Darwin without the required number of supervisors over the age of 21, the team will not be able to participate.

COVID-19 restrictions and requirements are forever changing, and as a result, this Relay For Life event is subject to change. Here at Cancer Council NT, we will follow the latest advice and guidelines from the NT Government to ensure the safety of everyone involved in a Relay For Life 2024.   

Q: I have never participated in a Relay For Life and I am not sure I want to stay all night – can I leave early?

A: Absolutely! You can dip your toe into the Relay for Life experience by registering for a Half Relay and depart at midnight. Please pre-register for a Half Relay by advising the Relay For Life Darwin coordinator at fundraising@cancernt.org.au upon registration. You will not be able to depart at midnight without pre-registering.

Q: How many people can I have in my Relay For Life team?

A: You can have a maximum of 10 people per team. You are more than welcome to register multiple teams for your family and friends (e.g. Kelly’s Team 1, Kelly’s Team 2 etc.)

Q: Do I have to walk all night?

A: No. You don’t have to stay on the track all 12 hours, but we encourage teams to have at least one person on the track at all times to get the most out of your Relay experience. One person will hold the team’s baton each lap and these laps will count towards your team’s lap count.

Q: Can we have team volunteers to assist with the set up of our tent/marquee but they are not participating in the event?

A: Yes. All Team volunteers will receive a yellow wrist band - note each team can have a maximum of five volunteers. Gates will close at 12pm and all those not staying overnight and volunteers can depart.

Q: Do I have to pre-register for the Survivors and Carers Lap?

A: We absolutely encourage participants to pre-register for the Survivors and Carers Lap. Upon registration please contact our Relay For Life coordinator on 08 8944 1800 or fundraising@cancernt.org.au On the day please go to the information tent upon arrival to retrieve your survivors and carers sash.

Q: Where does the money I fundraised go?

A: All money raised in the Territory stays in the Territory! All funds raised will go towards education, prevention programs and support services for Territorians affected by cancer. For further information visit nt.cancer.org.au
