Illawarra 2024

Relay for Life first timer!

This is my first Relay for Life. After living in the Illawarra for over 20 years and having seen multiple Relay for Life events at my local sports center over the years, I finally decided to take part!

I am walking in memory of my Grandad Norman, who passed away before I was born due to a spinal tumour. I have seen some lovely old photos of my grandad, who was an amazing mechanic and metal engineer. He had a workshop in the back of the small family home and my mum can still remember his tools and equipment there, such as vices. He actually avoided conscription during World War 2 due to his skills being needed at home, in the manufacture of metal products.

My mum herself had a brush with skin cancer a number of years ago. She had 2 surgeries to remove a tumour on her forehead and was surprised that it is still possible to get skin cancer in the UK! I would strongly recommend everyone to follow sunsafe practices in their day to day life, even in a cooler country like the UK, "Slip, Slap, Slop, Seek and Wrap" as they say!!
