Illawarra 2024

I'm stepping up against cancer!

This year, I’m taking on Relay For Life and completing a personal challenge to raise funds for the cancer council.

The statistics are staggering with 400 Australians diagnosed with cancer every day. But how do you put a number to the emotional rollercoaster that is faced from the moment the journey from diagnosis starts?

The past 12 months I have felt this more acutely with the passing of one of my best friends after a 6 year battle, and the diagnosis of my own father with inoperable cancer.  The strength, courage, hope and faith of the people I know who have fought and continue to fight is inspiring.

So I wanted to do my small part to help those impacted by cancer.

My gorgeous friend who bravely lost her fight would often swim at Austinmer Ocean Pool – it was one of her ‘happy places’. She would drag me down with her on occasions, but I rarely went in as I am a ‘wimp’ when it comes to cold water.

So for my challenge – I will be jumping in to Austinmer Ocean Pool – whatever the weather for 12 consecutive days – starting 1st October.  I do this small act to honour her memory….

With your support, I hope to help as many people impacted by cancer as possible. Together, we can support families when they need it most, empower people to reduce their risk, speak up for communities, and find new ways to better detect and treat cancer.

Please donate to my Relay today and together, we can help Cancer Council provide life-changing support services, advocacy, prevention and research across Australia.

Thank you to all who are donating and supporting the relay for life!

So far this year I've helped provide:

Challenge completed!

Firstly THANKYOU for your support! I personally raised my target AND as a team, ELOSSA has reached and exceeded our target!

Someone asked if I enjoyed my challenge - my answer was yes and no! The weather was not altogether kind to me - cold, rainy and windy - however there was one sunny day which made the experience so much more pleasant.

In the short time that I made this my daily habit, seeing the same people (who have made this their lifelong habit) I came to appreciate the appeal and just how lucky we are to live in this special part of the world. Something that I can take for granted.

I came away from this challenge with an understanding of why my gorgeous friend found time spent in Austinmer pool not only rejuvenating but also calming.

I have not 100% become a convert yet, but on nice sunny days you may find me down there enjoying the crisp water whilst contemplating and appreciating life….

Rain, blue bottles and waves!

So I am well into my challenge and so far there has not been a warm and sunny day. The water temperature range has been 17 to 18.4 degrees! So I am well out of my comfort zone.
I must admit though that I am beginning to understand why people ocean swim all year round - the  exhilaration of swimming in the cold water can be intoxicating!
I am not a convert yet......
